Top Antivirus Software Programs: Protect Your Privacy and Data

There are many anti-virus software packages available today - so many, in fact, that it is difficult to decide on the "best" anti-virus software.
Four packages that consistently appear at the top of reviews of anti-virus programs appear below. The answer to the question, "Which is the best anti-virus software?" is no longer as easy to answer as it was in the days, when Norton AntiVirus was "the" software. There are some serious contenders to that throne and all are worthy of consideration.

Norton AntiVirus by Symantec

Unquestionably Symantec anti-virus software is the heavy hitter in the area of virus protection. It sports a user-friendly interface with protection for instant messaging, email, and script blocking. It scans, blocks, repairs, or quarantines email viruses, SMTP worms, and Trojans and automatically detects spyware and adware. Reviewers do cite a lengthy installation time for Norton AntiVirus as well as a slow hard drive scanning process. The program has a LiveUpdate feature to keep virus definitions current.

McAfee VirusScan 2006

Reviewers especially like McAfee VirusScan 2006 for its effectiveness against spy ware programs that covertly gather user information and are often part of freeware or shareware downloads. McAfee anti-virus software detects and stops spyware before it is installed. Additionally, virus definitions are updated daily and incoming and outgoing email and instant messages are scanned in real time. Deep system scans are, however, somewhat slow.

Trend Micro PC_Cillin Internet Security

PC_Cillin offers strong antivirus protection and outstanding product support. Whereas both Norton and McAfee sometimes interfere with the functioning of other software, PC_Cillin has an excellent reputation as it does not exhibit this troublesome behavior. Reviewers do point out that in systems with less than 500mb of RAM, PC_Cillin will slow down machine operation. An added plus is the software checks for definition updates every three hours.

eTrust EZ Antivirus

Featuring a user interface not unlike the Windows Explorer, reviewers often cite EZ Antivirus as a good program for novice users. One point of concern is that the software only scans email when an attachment is opened. Virus definitions are updated daily and the program can be put in "snooze" mode while new software is being installed on the system.
